Watershed Walks

Watershed Walks is inspired by the Walking Water pilgrimage that walks with the water stories from the headwaters of the Owen's River down to Los Angeles.

Watershed Walks is a series of guided walking meditations along the paths of your local wild waters. With each walk we ask, "How might we live in reciprocity with the waters in our watershed?" "What can we do to respect and protect these waters, today or on any day?" We walk slowly and quietly, and we listen. We occasionally stop to touch the water, sit with it. We break silence with a witness council to share our own stories, curiosities or insights from the walk.

Every Watershed Walk is followed by a community potluck. Some are followed by Watershed Tracks, a wildlife tracking session to connect with and celebrate the life of the watershed. All ages welcome. Please join us for any or all.

Nature of Council with School of Lost Borders

Nature of Council in the Owens Valley and Big Pine, CA
Council is an ancient way and modern practice whose roots are deep within the natural world, spanning diverse cultures and spiritual traditions. Here we remember and learn to listen to the whole: the people, the place and all living things. This practice elicits an experience of deep community, recognizing that each voice has value, every person has a gift, a story to share, a piece of the puzzle.

The eight-day arc of this training gives us time to explore the circles of our days and the seasons of our heart. We will use the universal map of the Four Directions as our compass to guide our way through the wilderness within and without. We will be asked to cross threshold after threshold into the wholeness of our lives. The questions you are living and the experiences you bring with you will shape our time together, as will the shadows following you here. Here on the flanks of the Eastern Sierras, weather and wildlife will influence our movement.

The Dark Passage: Grief, Loss and Illness

"The land around us (and within us) teaches with each passing season, and with each flood, drought, fire and storm, that out of change, crisis and a dying to what was, there appears a new story of form and adaptation. And that how we respond and integrate change into the fabric of our ongoing story colors the character of what comes next."

Deep in our ancestral memory, we know that this place of painful loss and wounding carries within it our transformation. Perhaps you sense this already in your bones: surrendering to what has been torn away permits the unfolding of new possibilities.

We find it everywhere in the history of those who have gone before us. From indigenous cultures across the world to Greek myths to modern times, the blueprint is always the same: Change is precipitated through an ordeal, which has the potential to be an initiation into a new life. Here, old grief can find release and a new life phase or stage can be consciously marked.

That most frightens us." ~Marianne Williamson
